What is a MUN?
A MUN or Model United Nations is a simulation of the United Nations, commonly run by and intended for students. They become ambassadors of a country (most of the time, a UN member) and are placed in different committees (really existing or not) such as the Security Council or the Environmental Council with the aim of resolving issues, which are given before the conference so they can do some research and write a clause...
During the simulation, the students, who are now delegates, debate the issue by submitting clauses (ideas to solve the issue), make speeches, in order to find solutions to the real and topical important crisis they are dealing with. This experience will lead them to set out strategies where they will create/make allies or rivals with whom they will engage negotiations to solve the conflicts. At the end a General Assembly is held with a new issue where everyone is gathered to propose clauses in front of all the other delegates. The committees as well as the GA, despite having different issues, all have one major theme in common.
Model UNs began for the first time in Harvard in 1951, and now the concept has been taken up by a lot of prestigious schools and secondary schools such as Sciences Po (Paris) or the University of Peking. MUN clubs opened in middle school, high school and college/university, and help pupils to prepare for MUN conferences.
